WEEK 1: GROUP DISCUSSION & RESEARCH

The goal of this assignment is to create a tattoo stamp and then turn it into a model. We proceed to work in group to decide each of our individual design principles and elements.

Within our tutorial group, we are required to choose design element and a design principle and work on producing your design using tattoo stamps and a model. As each teaching session develops, each of us might have the same design element to work with different/same ideas under the guidance or Mr Yoong.

The beginning of our research in Miro.

Our WhatsApp group chat.

WEEK 2: GENERATING TATOO STAMPS

After gathering all the informations and a few group discussions, we proceed to work on our individual tattoo stamps. On the same day, we were also able to discuss our idea with or tutor Mr Yoong for further improvements and changes. From there, we alter our tattoo stamps such as the thickness of the lines, hatches and shadings to the best way possible to showcase our design principle and elements.

Transformation of tattoo stamps that I made for line & axis, space and hierarchy.

Tattoo stamps designed by my group mate Heng that displays the transformations of his tattoo stamps through the arrangement of lines.

Tattoo stamp designed by Cing Yen that shows the differences in hatching.

WEEK 3: MODEL MAKING

After we finalised our tattoo stamps, we then seek for final approval from Mr Yoong. We were required to revisit the tattoo and interpret them into models. We were given examples of architectural terminologies for composition and construction of our models.

Since it is also the submission
week, we did not procrastinate and continue to work on our wix slides immediately after the construction of our models. We make sure to include the necessary drawings such as the design concepts, idea sketches and 3D translations based on our model.

Some examples of models constructed by our groupmates, Kevin and Beh.

There's majority two slides for each model. One slide that consist images of our tattoo stamp and models, along with the elements and principles.

Whereas for the next slide is to display the design process sketch journal to compile all the writing/sketches of idea, tattoo stamps, 3D translations from tattoo stamps to model.

The Outcome

Throughout this assignment, we had faced several challenges since majority of us do not have any model making or designing background. Nevertheless, we tried our best and make it presentable and definitely had a great time working and assisting each other through out the process. In this project, I've strengthen my knowledge and understanding of design elements and principles and also different compositions.

My Reflection

1. Communication Skills

I was able to communicate and bond with my group mates despite some of them are new faces. To bring them together and work as a team, I also suggested to have group calls some of the nights during the assignment week to discuss about our presentation and get them to share their opinion.

2. Digital Literacy

During this COVID-19 outbreak, it is considered troublesome for some of us to meet up face to face. Luckily, we were able to utilise social media platforms to communicate with each other such as WhatsApp and Discord. Through Miro, we can share our ideas and everyone is able to edit and add on informations which was a very beneficial application for us.

3. Intrapersonal Skills

In this assignment, I took the initiative to conduct further research on the translation of 2D forms to 3D forms. I was able to appreciate and get inspired through simplicity, “Less is more” has been the design philosophy of famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In order to make sure we will be satisfied with the end result, I always look back at my model and seek for further improvements, obtain valuable suggestions from the team before presenting the final outcome.
