My Progress

WEEK 5: RESEARCHING AND UNDERSTANDING THE PROJECT BRIEF

I started my assignment by doing research first regarding the 8 types of design elements which are balance, harmony, rhythm, emphasis, movement, variety, contrast and unity. After a through research, I was able to understand the definition behind each elements. Now, I have a rough idea of how and what I want to construct for my mini models. We were required to work within 10x10 scale for the 8 models.

We are also required to extract a shape from Assignment 1 based on the final model. And then translate the shape to more varieties to create the mini models.

I start to work on some sketches too since I already have a basic idea of what I will be creating.

WEEK 6: DESIGN PRINCIPLES MODEL

Since I already started sketching my ideas about emphasis, rhythm and variety, I decided too work on those 3 elements first.

For rhythm, it is considered to be one of the hardest mini model as it requires an accurate calculation and imagination by playing with the sizes to create the sense of rhythm. Rhythm is about creating an exciting and attractive sequence that is can be easily identified from others.

For emphasis, it also displays a great level of difficulty. The idea is to create cubes and cut out pointer shapes on the cubes to act as a navigator. The pointers will all lead to one single direction which is huge circle in the middle after stacking it up.

For variety however it is rather easy. The idea is to put different shapes of different sizes together, some overlapping each other within the square grid. After all, variety is the used of different elements to create a structure that hold's viewers attention.

WEEK 7: DESIGN PRINCIPLE MODELS

For the third week, I continue to work on the rest of the 5 design principle models which are unity, harmony, balance, contrast and movement. Week 7 can be considered one of the most crucial week as there's a lot to of models to be completed. By this time, I made sure to complete all my sketches regarding the mini model and gathered enough informations for me to proceed immediately.

Unity is the sense of harmony between all parts of the work of art which creates a sense of completeness. I was inspired by an origami work formed by triangles that's enclosed together creating a void.

Harmony is a pleasing agreement of parts in a composition. Harmony can be describe as sameness, the belonging of one thing with another. With that being said, I want to create a simple yet direct translation by using multiple rectangles that have 3 specific sizes in total of 20 of them.

Balance. I was inspired by the CCTV building in Beijing. The exterior of the building changes dramatically but remains in balance as you move around due to its symmetry arrangement.

Contrast displays a significant difference between elements to create a different sense of visual interest which inspired me to create an infinity loop within a cube to enhance the differences.

Movement is the path a viewer's eye take through the work of art. It can be directed through edge, shapes or colours. In this case, I choose to stack and create a connection with small pyramids and arrange it in an irregular pattern.

WEEK 8: COMPLETION OF FINAL MODEL & POWERPOINT PRESENTATION SLIDE.

For the final week, I begin the construction for my final model and mock up of final model. It is rather time consuming since I am required to combine a least 4 design elements into one model. I started off the process by doing some basic sketches creating a 20x20 cube and work within the space. I also made a 3D exploration model in advance to have a better idea of how the final outcome will look like.

The Outcome

Overall, this assignment requires advance research for informations break down. In terms of design developing and model building, it is slightly harder than previous assignment but it is fun to explore around various design elements. The most difficult part for this assignment is probably the immense workload within a short time frame. Overall, through this assignment, I can tell my understanding of spatial and model building techniques have improve and I became a more detailed person.

My Reflection

1. Intrapersonal Skills

I was able to properly organised my time schedule based on the workload. I felt that I became better at time management since by the end of the day, I am ahead of the schedule. With that being said, I was able to double check for mistakes and maintain a healthy emotional status.

I was able to improve my understanding of spatial designing and model making. If this assignment were to compare with the previous one, it is much difficult and requires a lot more thinking skills especially on the hybrid model part. It is not as easy as putting things together but instead translating it into a unique structure that resembles a certain element, while also considering the idea can be performed given the time frame or not. A lot knowledge and skills were required in the process of working towards the hybrid model through try and error.

2. Lifelong Learning

3. Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

This assignment definitely challenged my thinking skill since there so many design elements that were needed to be considered and sketches to be done before the constructing process. The PowerPoint presentation slides also gave me a hard time arranging the layout and spacing since I am never good at any computer applications. After several sketches and mock up models, I was able to utilise the space given for the hybrid model wisely by inserting the design elements that I researched, design strategies taught by Mr Paul to conclude my Hybrid model.
