My Progress

WEEK 4: BRIEFING AND CONDUCTING MEASUREMENTS

On the first week, as usual I will start off by going through the assignment briefing and MIB to make sure I did not miss out any important details.

Following that, I proceed to investigate my human shape and static action. I measured myself with a measuring tape which includes height, head dimension, shoulder, limps, height in tip toe etc, any measurements that could affect the structure of my one-to-one structure. After I had gathered up as many measurements as I can, I continue to pick one repetitive action during the pandemic. I had came to the conclusion that sitting with one leg bending is no doubt my favourite position.

WEEK 5: STUDIES ON MATERIAL & STRUCTURE

During week 5, I am satisfied with the amount of measurements I gathered and ready to start off my assignment. But before that, I first look into the materials that I am allowed to use. I have decided to construct my model with the most commonly used and easily obtained recycled item throughout the pandemic, cardboard.

Cardboard
is lightweight, easy to cut and shape and readily available since most of the packagings are made with cardboard, making it a recycled material. Cardboard can be joined with PVA and many other glues, sellotape and masking tape. This makes it ideal for model making.

WEEK 6: BUILDING TECTONIC STRUCTURE

On Week 6, I started the construction of my one-to-one scaled model. I found it extremely difficult to get used to working on such a large scale as it is completely different compare to the previous assignment. Since the materials were extremely large to work with, a lot of time had gone to waste in the process of cutting the cardboards into the desired pieces.

Originally A1 size cardboard were cut into 6 squares pieces for construction of the structure. The pieces on the left however were further altered for joinery purposes.

WEEK 7 :DRAWINGS & PRESENTATION BOARD

During week 7, also the most crucial week, I was just in time to finish constructing my scaled structure before attending my tutorial class for the last time before submission. With one less burden, I proceed to carry out my orthographic drawings which include, elevation, section, and floor plan.

To clarify and compare the one-to-one scale to my actual self, I came up with another sets of drawings but this time, human figures were included. I also created imaginary sunlight source as stated in the brief requirements.

My orthographic drawings, elevation, floor plan, section based on the scale 1:10.

Once most of the drawings were done, I immediately begin to conduct my slides and include the necessary drawings/ design explorations through PowerPoint.

The Outcome

This assignment was a challenging one as it was hard to construct a scaled-down one-to-one structure. Other than that, this assignment also requires extreme precision and to be mindful of all measurements in order for the joineries to work. Overall this assignment gave me a lot of knowledge on how to relate my ideas from 'self' and 'body' to space and structure.

My Reflection

1. Intrapersonal Skills

I learnt to properly organised my time schedule based on the workload. I felt that I became better at time management after this assignment knowing that I only barely made it in time due to some unexpected hiccups. With that being said, I wasn't able to double check for mistakes and neglected my emotional status such as stress and anxiety.

2. Lifelong Learning

Throughout the assignment, I was able to gain new and extra knowledge regarding technical drawing skills. Despite the fact that I was already introduced to scale drawing, using a scale ruler is still very tricky to me. Not only that, I were to stay focus and be picky on every little details and measurements to ensure a satisfying outcome. This assignment definitely opened my eyes and I am glad to take in new knowledge that could possibly be useful and help me in the future.

3. Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

This assignment definitely challenged my thinking skill since I the materials that I can work with are limited to recycled items. This definitely gave me a tough time in picking the suitable choice since there are a lot of other things to be considered such as joinery technique and tool. Through out the process, I also made injured myself by accident that required me to stall the the whole assignment progress which put me in the position to reconsider the time frame for the construction of my one-to-one structure.
